What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?
I can identify at least three kinds of ambition. One, the kind of ambition encouraged by questions like, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” is very standard. The child answers with something straightforward and definable because that is the child’s world. Perhaps the answer might be “teacher” or “a doctor like Mommy” or “a firefighter.” Whatever the answer, there is usually little nuance to it.
