One of the ways that people in power try to assimilate those they wish to conquer is to change the way they eat. Now there are other things that can be done that will bring people to their knees, like starve them or destroy their crops and herds. That is usually a war tactic or a way to obtain acquiescence without a loss of your own troops. But once a power has taken control through powers of empire or when immigrants are a threat to the powers that be, one way to control the people is through food.
